Punjab's economy is mainly agro-based. Of late, a stage
of near saturation has been reached in foodgrain production.
Therefore, the need of the hour is to encourage diversification
in Agriculture and to build up a climate for industrial
investment by providing linkages between agriculture
and industry. The State Government would specially encourage
industrial units both in small and large/medium sector
based on agro-produce.
Electronic
industry, particularly in the high-tech area, would
continue to be a priority for the State Government.
Efforts would be made to bring in the best available
technology. The State Government has already developed
an Industrial Estate 'ELTOP' for Electronic Units at
Mohali. For providing training to entrepreneurs, a Centre
for Electronics Development & Testing (CEDT) has
been set up at Mohali and another centre for testing
of electronic equipment (ETDC) has also been set up
at Mohali. The State Government proposes to provide
a special package of incentives to the electronic industry.
After
the Green Revolution, Punjab has witnessed an era of
White Revolution. Milk-based industry would be encouraged
in the State in order to profitably utilise the large
quantity of milk produced. Encouragement would also
be given to units for the manufacture of Cattle Feed,
Poultry Feed and Poultry products.

With
the intrusion of electronic media in the rural areas,
the urge to live in comfort is increasing. Punjab with
its high per capita income, has vast potential for consumer
goods markets. May it be Refrigerators, Washing Machines,
Kitchen Appliances. TVs, furniture or any other domestic
goods, there is no dearth of customers in the State.
Hence, it should be the endeavour of the State Government
to accord high priority to white goods industry in the
State.

Promotion of Large Scale Industry |
Punjab's industrial scenario has so far been dominated
by the small scale sector. However, in order to sustain
the small scale units and to increase employment potential,
it is necessary to attract large scale units. The State
has conducive enviroment for attracting industrial investment.
These include a responsive Government, availability
of power, a highly skilled manpower, peaceful industrial
relations, network of rail and roads, highly developed
urban infrastructure, educational and health care facilities.
The State Government would provide all facilities to
large industrial houses having plans to invest in Punjab,
specially in large units which can trigger further growth.
