Major
strengths of the State
|
| Punjab's
economy presents the inherent strength necessary
for industrial growth. It has the country's most
highly developed basic infrastructure required by
industry. The political leadership of the State
is stable and fully committed towards promoting
industrial growth and encouraging employment in
hi-tech industries. |

The
Govt. is pro- technology and the entire State machinery
is geared to welcome and support new industrial
activity. With its progressive industrial policy
and liberal incentive package there has been recently
a spate of new proposals to set up Electronics &
Software, Textile, Engineering and Agro-based Industries
in the State. |
| The
Punjab State Electronics Development & Production
Corporation Ltd.(ECP) has been designated as the
nodal agency for promotion and development of Electronics,
Telecommunication and Information Technology Industry
in the State. This Corporation is committed to handhold
and assists all new projects and investment in the
field of Electronics and IT to ensure smooth entry
and a comfortable stay. |

| Punjab
State, with only 1.5 per cent of geographical area
of the country, produces 20 percent of wheat, 9
percent of Rice and 14 percent of Cotton of the
total produce under these crops in the country.
Punjab is 1st in average per hectare yield of rice,
wheat and cotton. |
During
the year 1997-98, the total production of foodgrains
touched 211.61 lac tonnes, a matter of great pride
for any state and its people.Punjab
State which has earned the rare distribution of
being called the "Food Basket of the whole
country" and the "Granary of India",
has been contributing 40-50 percent of Rice &
60-70 percent of Wheat to the Central Pool for the
last two decades. |
