| What
Is Diarrhoea ? |
Three
or more loose motions per day is considered to be diarrhoea.
The motions are watery, and may contain mucus, undigested
food or blood. The cause may be simple, such as dietary
excess, or an episode of anxiety. In many cases it may
be due to a temporarily inflamed colon probably due to
food that was not fresh or that did not suit.
If the colon is irritable, it is overactive but otherwise
normal: There may be bouts of diarrhoea, with or without
pain. Bouts may be associated with emotional trauma, stress,
or debility. If the colon is spastic, there is consistently
more pain caused by spasms of the colon. The pains are
relieved by the passing of wind or stool. If the mucous
membrane of the colon is disordered. mucous colitis can
result. This can lead to bouts of diarrhoea, often with
the passing of large masses of mucus.
Ulcerated colon is usually accompanied by pain, fever
and profuse diarrhoea accompanied by blood arid mucus,
and should receive immediate allopathic attention.
Acute attacks of diarrhoea that recur at intervals of
weeks or months, or with accompanying fever of persistent
blood in the stools, should be assessed professionally.
Avoid dehydration in children and infants. |
