The condition usually begins in the small joints of the hands, especially the fingers, although other joints can be involved. With recurrent attacks, the joints can become swollen and immobile. There can often be wasting of the surrounding muscle. General treatments of benefit include compresses on the affected parts and an alkaline diet.

The term arthritis covers more than a hundred different types of joint diseases, the most common being rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory disease where the joint tissues are attacked by the body's own defences. It is most often seen as a shifting attack on one or more joints at a time, frequently settling on the fingers, but sometimes involving many joints in increasing pain. swelling and immobility.

Osteoarthritis is a degeneration of the joints that is most likely to strike those that receive the most use or stress over the years. As a result, the knees, big toes, spine, and end joints of the fingers are common sites of complaint. Symptorns vary from mild to severe depending on the amount of degeneration that has taken place.
