Hey
guys!! Do you remember the sensational numbers'Oh Baby,
Don't Break My Heart
', and 'Jambo'? That's right,
Stereo Nation is the name and mixing music is the game.
Pure fusion of diverse elements of Indian and Caribbean
music to create a foot tapping concoction for one and
all.The exceptionaly small band comprises the quintessential
punjabbi munda Taz and the Caribbean born Kendell Smith,
a dub poet.Their music is for the crowd to have a 'good
time.Pioneers of what later came to be established as
the bhangra-reggae genre, the duo has been making music
since 1989, when Taz's debut act Hit The Deck topped
the Asian charts and created a groove for the bhangra-mixes
among the British club hoppers.
Though the music of Stereo Nation has a bhagra-reggae
mix base, its appeal comes from the universality of
the music and one finds a balanced mix of hip-hop, rhythm
& blues, soul and pop in their style. Taz is today
a legend in the Asian underground circuit
with a massive fan following. Taz's sounds reflect the
inherent mix of Asian, African and western cultural
influences that have moulded him. Living and growing
up in Coventry. Working as the DJ Johnny Zee, Taz had
been mixing the bhangra style with African and Caribbean
beats, creating a fertile ground for the coming bumper
crop of bhangra mixes. Kendell, was excellent at his
own sphere of dub poetry, that presents poetry in a
more acceptable format to the accompaniment of popular
instruments. Initially Taz's road manager, Kendell soon
joined in and the two experimented by mixing their individual
traits of music. The combination resulted in their first
release Sprits of Rhythm in 1994. The response was electrifying
and Stereo Nation soon swept the UK underground scene
clean.
The Asian sub-continent was next to go into the trance
with the rhythmic fusion of bhangra and African beats.
Stereo Nation has had a few releases in UK and three
of their albums have been released in India (including
the controversial 'I've been waiting'). And Stereo Nation
is now all set to release Oh Laila, their fourth album
with T Series. No, hang on ,there's more to the group!!
Stereo Nation has some new members Kam, Neil and Anthony.
In a bid to keep the freshness of their sounds intact,
the group is focusing on adding different elements to
the show, more percussion.
Stereo Nation is also keeping abreast with the times
and incorporating Latino, Cuban, English and other coastal
music in their compositionsaand presentations. All said
and done, here are two fun loving musicians who incidentally
also happen to be the avant -gardes of the bhangra-reggae
genre that has made the whole of Asian subcontinent
as well as the Asian underground in Europe go balle
balle!
