The
Punjab School Education Board came into being
under the Act of Legislation in 1969, amended in 1987.
The main functions of the Board are viz., (i) To prescribe
the syllabi, courses of studies and text books for school
education; (ii) To arrange for the preparation, writing,
compilation, printing, publishing and sale of text books,
other educational material and undertake the publication
of any other educational work, book or periodicals;
(iii) To hold examinations for school education, publish
the results of such examinations and grant certificates
to persons who have passed these examinations; (iv)
To define conditions for affiliation of institutions
in terms of teachers and their qualifications, curriculum,
equipment, buildings and other educational facilities
and (v) To institute and award scholarships, medals
and prizes |
The
Board is headed by the Chairman who is appointed by
the State Government for a period of 3 years at a time
and to assist him a Vice-Chairman is also appointed
by the Government for a period of 3 years, under the
Act. In order to execute the duties of the Board, there
is a post of Secretary who is the principal executive
officer of the Board and is appointed by the Board for
a period of 4 years. The academic wing is headed by
the Director (Academics). The main functions of this
wing are to prepare the syllabii and the curriculam
from Ist to 12th class keeping in view the national
policy of Education and the local requirements of Punjab.
They also prepare manuscripts of the textbooks.
Publication section:
The publication wing is headed by Deputy Director and
assisted by the publication Officers, Assistant publication
Officers and other supporting staff. At present, there
are 210 titles apart from the other publications like
syllabii and guidebooks.
Examination section:
the Controller of Examinations assisted by Deputy Secretaries
and Assistant Secretaries heads the examination section.
It is the responsibility of this wing to conduct the
Middle, Matric and +2 examinations, to evaluate the
answer-books and to declare results and to issue certificates
etc.
Administrative section:
The Secretary assisted by the Finance & Development
Officer, Joint Secretary, Deputy Secretaries, Assistant
Secretaries etc heads this wing. This section deals
with the establishment and administration. The responsibility
of the Finance & Development Officer is to maintain
accounts of the Board and their profitable investments
and to prepare budget. |
The
Board gives merit scholarships to meritorious students
i.e., one student per 1000 students. These scholarships
are given only to those students who are not covered
by the national/state scholarships. In 1979, the State
Government had started Adarsh School Scheme to provide
quality education to rural students. Originally it was
a scheme to provide at least one Adarsh school in every
Block, but only six schools started functioning. Later
on, these schools were transferred to the Punjab School
Education Board. Now the Board is running such seven
schools at a cost of more than Rs. 1 crore annually
one being added only in the year 1999. At present there
are 1175 Schools and 175 colleges affiliated to the
Punjab School Education Board. This figure does not
include the Govt. and Govt. aided schools. |
