After
the partition of the country in 1947, the Punjab Education
Department functioned from a camp office set up in Shimla’s
Metropole
Hotel. During that time the Education Secretary was
also the Directorate of Public Instruction. On February
15, 1959, the office shifted to Chandigarh, the new
capital of Punjab. At present, four Directorates function
under the Punjab Education Department, namely the Directorate
of Public Instruction (Colleges), Directorate of Secondary
Education, Directorate of Primary Education and Directorate
of State Council of Educational Research and Training

All
government schools in Punjab are affiliated with Punjab
Schools Education Board.
The Government of Punjab is encouraging the participation
of Private Sector by providing
incentives in the form of land at cheaper rates. Proposals
are on anvil to set up a chain of
Adarsh Schools at the village level. In the first phase,
20 schools will be started and one
Adrash School has been planned for each Block. It is

The
Punjab School Education Board came into being under
Act
of Legislation in 1969, amended in 1987. The main functions
of the Board are to prescribe the syllabi, courses of
studies and text books for school education; to arrange
for the preparation, writing , compilation, printing;
Publishing and sale of text books, other educational
material and undertake the publication of any other
educational work, book or periodicals; to hold examinations
for school education, publish the results of such examinations
and grant certificates to persons who have passed these
examinations to define conditions for affiliation of
institutions in terms of teachers and their qualifications,
curriculum,equipment, buildings and other educational
facilities and to institute and award scholarships,
medals and prizes.Read

All
Children in the age group of 6-14 are to be provided
primary education under Free and
Compulsory Education Scheme. In order to achieve this
universalisation, efforts are on to
increase retention of children in schools, increase
enrollment by opening new primary schools, more infrastructure
in the existing primary Schools and innovative approach
and decentralized planning irrespective of any social

Various
institutions are functioning at the state level to usher
in a qualitative improvement in the existing educational
system of the State. Their aim is to develop syllabus
and curricula of the various subjects at school stage
and to monitor and develop new techniques and methodologies
in the field of school education.

Instead
of creating new institutions, more attention needs to
be paid to the consolidation of the the existing infrastructure
which has been up-graded through additional investment
under the World Bank Scheme to bring about further improvements
in standards and quality of Technical Education in the
existing institutions through an in-built system of
constant quality and efficiency improvement, up-gradation
and modernization in the Technical Education System.

The
Medical Education and Research in Punjab is governed
by the Directorate of Medical
Education & Research, Punjab. This Directorate was set
up in April 1973, to develop medical manpower and to
ensure that medical education and teaching hospitals
receive adequate attention and proper facilities for
research work in the various branches of medicine. This
Directorate works under the control of the Director,
Research and Medical Education, Punjab. Its office is
at Chandigarh. He is assisted by a Joint director,
Officer-on-special Duty and Deputy Controller (Finance
& Account).

Punjab
is served by five universities at Chandigarh, Patiala,
Amritsar, Ludhiana and Jalandhar. More than 200 colleges
are affiliated to these universities. The range, diversity
and sophistication of subjects offered by the universities
are as good as anywhere in the country. Presently three
universities in the state have excellent departments
of Business Management. There are also more than 200
colleges in Punjab affiliated to the five universities.
There are five medical colleges in Punjab, one each
at Patiala, Amritsar and Faridkot, run by the government
and two private medical colleges at Ludhiana, including
the famous Christian Medical College.
