Guru
Nanak Dev University was established at Amritsar on
November 24, 1969 to mark the 500th birth anniversary
of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
The
University has an eventful history. Carefully nurtured
by illustrious academicians as well as administrators,
it has created a place of pride for itself on the academic
map of India. The motto of the University as engraved
on its emblem (Guru’s wisdom illumines all) speaks of
the vision and idealism for which the university stands.
The
university is spread over a stretch of 500 acres towards
the west of the city and facing the Grand Trunk Road.
Guru Nanak Dev University is a residential as well as
an affiliating university. Its jurisdiction extends
over colleges in the five districts of Punjab, namely
of Amritsar, Jalandhar, Nawan Sheher, Kapurthala and
Gurdaspur.
In
addition to its obligatory pursuit of the spread and
propagation of Punjabi 1anguage and Guru Nanak studies,
the University in its initial years laid an equal emphasis
on the development of humanities and basic sciences.
As a result two of its major departments i.e Chemistry
and Life Sciences have been recognised for the UGC special
assistance by the expert committee for the 8th plan.
In recent years it has diversified in a big way into
applied sciences making it one of the distinguished
centres of industry related job-oriented programmes.
It is one of the few universities in country, which
have attempted to restructure the syllabi in the light
of reports submitted by UGC expert committees.
