During baptism, the day of which is decided according to convenience, the first rituals are done at the entrance of the church. The parents of the child, relatives and the godparents of the child are present. Usually, a man and a woman close to the family are requested to act as the godparents of the child. They can belong to different families. The godparents are responsible for raising the child as a Christian in the absence of the natural parents. During the ceremony the godmother holds the child.

At the entrance to the church the priest asks the child a few questions like, what s/he wants from the church, whether s/he accepts Christ as his/her God, and so on. Since the child is unable to reply, the godmother answers these questions on its behalf affirmatively. The child then is taken inside, where the arrangements for baptism have been made by the church.

Proclaiming the belief, parts of the Bible are read, especially the Gospel of St. John (3:1-5). The priest then asks the child more questions. As earlier, the godmother responds. Then the priest sanctifies the water for baptism by chanting of prayers and making the sign of a cross over it. The child is then anointed with olive oil. Olive oil is consecrated once every year by the bishop and kept in every church for different purposes. The priest asks the parents for the name they have chosen for the child.

Among Christians, the naming or christening of the child takes place at the time of baptism. Calling out her/his name and chanting prayers, the priest dabs the child with oil on her/his forehead and chest, using the thumb of the right hand. Baptism follows the anointment.

The priest chants the following prayers. "In the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit I baptize you." He then pours water on the head of the child three times in the sign of the cross. At the end of the prayer the gathering chants," Amen". After drying the child's head, the priest chanting prayers gives him/her a white robe to symbolize the swaddling-cloth worn by Jesus.

Then the child is made to hold a lighted candle with the chanting of prayers to symbolize "Jesus Christ" as the Light of the Universe. Then all stand at the altar and say various prayers for the safety and purity of the child. Thus ends the sacrament of baptism. A feast follows for all those who have attended the baptism.
