Art
is described as a creation or expression of something beautiful
especially in a visual form and Arts and Crafts as a phrase
means decorative designs and handicrafts. In this field, also,
Punjab has a distinguished tradition, which its people have
maintained in spite of the passage of time.

Paintings in Punjab |
Even
though paintings in Punjab is thought of essentially as
19th century work done in 'Sikh Panjab', there is little
doubt that it goes back to 16th century, when the subah
(province) of Lahore flourished under the Mughals. Painters
from the region were working in the imperial studios there,
and illustrated manuscripts were being produced. |
| Portraiture |
Portraiture,
which has repeatedly been regarded as the most favoured
theme of 'Sikh painting', was indeed produced on a considerable
scale, and some very sensitive studies were turned out.

| Pahari,
Hindu and Sikh Themes |
| The
evidence of style had long suggested a strong connection
of Pahari influence in Sikh paintings. Then there is a
sharp distinction between Hindu and Sikh themes that belongs
mostly to a period much later than that of Maharaja Ranjit
Singh. |
| Chowk-Poorana
|
| Plastering
the walls with mud and drawing ferns, plants, several
other fascinating motifs has been a way of life of the
woman of Punjab. The art of mudwall paintings in Punjab
is called Chowk-Poorana. |
